Dark Side of the Moon Astilbe is a compact mounding herbaceous perennial with handsome deep chocolate foliage that emerges yellow. Stems holding feathery panicles of raspberry buds that open to rosy purple flowers above the leaves in mid to late summer.  Flowers best in part shade and rich, moist soils.  Astilbe are deer and rabbit resistant.
